President’s Letter

GSHRM Members:

It is only March and the GSHRM Board and Committees have accomplished very much!  We are working diligently to position GSHRM for another great year.  Committees are beginning to develop their SHAPE initiatives and we are working together to link those initiatives to our Strategic Plan.  I am pleased to share with you the following information:

Support Greenville Literacy – It is Not Too Late to Support the Novel Event on March 26

GSHRM partners each year with the Greenville Literacy Association on its annual fund raiser, A Novel Event.  This year’s Novel Event in on Saturday, March 26.  Please join GSHRM in continuing the support of this important event.  Support can be offered in many ways including donations, silent and live auction items, and sponsorships.  For more information, please go to the GSHRM website, contact Greenville Literacy, or contact the GSHRM Literacy Benefit Committee Chair, Kelly Shumaker.

SHRM National Conference – The Best HR Conference in the World

The SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition will be held in Las Vegas on June 26-29.  The SHRM 2011 Annual Conference will allow you to identify proven practices that are right for you and for your workplace by choosing from over 200 concurrent sessions which will offer a wide variety of perspectives, strategies, tools, and tips for increasing your knowledge as an HR professional.  Leading experts will speak on the most important HR topics in today’s changing economy.

February/March Meetings and Sponsors

At our February dinner meeting, Attorney Skip Spooner presented “How Vulnerable is Your Company to an Employment-Related Lawsuit?  Selecting Winnable Employment Law Cases from the Perspective of a Plaintiff’s Employment Lawyer.”  Skip, thank you for helping us consider employment matters from a different perspective.  Special thanks to Jackson Lewis, our February Platinum meeting sponsor.

At our March lunch meeting, we were honored as ADP, the 2010 SHRM Pinnacle Award sponsor presented Penny Wofford, the 2010 GSHRM President, and Ginger Lawrence, Workforce Readiness Council Chair, with a check for $1,000 made payable to GSHRM.  As you are aware, GSHRM was honored as a 2010 recipient of the prestigious SHRM Pinnacle Award due to the exemplary work of our Workforce Readiness Council.  In presenting the check, David McGrath, ADP Representative, stated, “This chapter recognized a work skills gap in its community and the need to address that gap through communication and collaboration among local and state government, community organizations and businesses, educators, and city residents.  Working together, all these stakeholders are getting the job done.  They’re giving both students and workers the skills they need to compete today and into the future.”  Thank you to all of the Workforce Readiness Committee and Strategic Planning Committee members for their work and dedication in making this award possible.  Thank you also for your significant contribution to our community.

The March GSHRM program was excellent as Attorney Daniel T. Sulton with Ford and Harrison presented An Update on Health Care Reform.” We extend a special thank you to Daniel for bringing us up to date on this important topic.  Special thanks to our March silver sponsor, Webster University.

 HR Careers Shadow Day

The GSHRM College Relations Subcommittee has announced that the 2nd annual HR Careers Shadow Day will be held on April 8.  This Day gives college students seeking a Human Resources career an excellent opportunity to spend the day shadowing a GSHRM member at work.  It is an excellent opportunity for HR students to have a first-hand look at a day in HR.  Please volunteer to be a Shadow Day sponsor. For further information, please contact Tracey Crews-Hammond .  Tracey, thank you for spearheading this important event.

An Exciting Event is Coming to our Region and Support/Assistance is Needed to Make it a Success

On March 25-26, the 2011 SHRM Southeast Regional Student Conference is being held at Clemson University.  This event gives students from across the region the chance to engage with fellow students and HR professionals in networking, learning, career development, and idea-sharing opportunities.  It also features the first annual SHRM case-solving competition.  Approximately 50 volunteers are needed to serve as room monitors and SPHR-certified judges for the competition and that’s where you can contribute.  We hope you will attend the event and bring a few of your HR colleagues with you.

This is a great opportunity to meet with and engage HR students – the future of our profession!  The Southeast Regional Team appreciates any help you can provide.  If you have questions, please contact Chris Stapleton, the SC SHRM State Council’s College Relations Director,

SHRM Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program

SHRM has established a scholarship program to help finance higher education for children of its members. Applicants must be children of national members of SHRM, and may be either high school seniors, high school graduates, or first-year college undergraduates enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study at an accredited four-year college or university. Awards are $1,500 each and may only be used for the first or second year of undergraduate study. A total of twenty-four (24) scholarships are awarded annually. Students must complete the application and mail it along with a complete high school or college transcript of grades to Scholarship America, postmarked no later than May 15. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of educational and career goals, and recommendation by an adult. For More Information Contact: SHRM Sons & Daughters Scholarship Program, Scholarship America, One Scholarship Way, P.O. Box 297, Saint Peter, MN 56082.  Telephone: 1-800-537-4180.

 Legislative Update

As you are aware, the State of South Carolina enacted a new rate structure for State unemployment taxes (SUTA) last year. This law went into effect on January 1, 2011; however, businesses were not notified of their new rate assignments until January 31, 2011. The new rates are astronomical for many companies that had unemployment claims filed in the last several years.  Ed Parris, GSHRM’s Legislative Committee Chair, is working to help GSHRM members have their voice heard by our legislators concerning this matter.  We can make a difference in changing legislative matters.  If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Ed Parris.

A New Look for the GSHRM Website

SHRM recently announced changes to the website software, which they provide to GSHRM.  If you are reading this message, you have noticed the new changes.  We hope you will find the updates helpful in accessing GSHRM information via the web and ask for your patience as we continue to learn this new system.  Our Website Committee Chair, Luke Varn, donates a significant amount of time to our website.  Luke, thank you for your dedication and assistance!  We greatly appreciate your help and support.

Please Join us at the April Dinner Meeting

Our next meeting is a dinner meeting on April 5.  GSHRM’s 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Rhonda Lockhart, Director of Corporate Human Resources with J. M. Smith Corporation will present a program regarding her Company’s nationally-recognized wellness program.  As many HR professionals continue to seek successful ways to offer the best benefit programs while balancing the bottom line, we look forward to this presentation.

I look forward to seeing you in Aril.

Best regards,

Teresa Medlin

2011 GSHRM President

GSHRM has allocated space for 5 spaces on their web-site newsletter to be used for advertisement purposes. Each space can be designed in various ways to promote your organization.

The cost for advertising for a six-month time period is $600, the full amount which must be paid in advance. In an effort to allow more organizations the opportunity to advertise, GSHRM will currently not allow companies to renew their advertising for a period longer than the initial six-months.
