February/March Meetings and Sponsors
At our February dinner meeting, Attorney Skip Spooner presented “How Vulnerable is Your Company to an Employment-Related Lawsuit? Selecting Winnable Employment Law Cases from the Perspective of a Plaintiff’s Employment Lawyer.” Skip, thank you for helping us consider employment matters from a different perspective. Special thanks to Jackson Lewis, our February Platinum meeting sponsor.
At our March lunch meeting, we were honored as ADP, the 2010 SHRM Pinnacle Award sponsor presented Penny Wofford, the 2010 GSHRM President, and Ginger Lawrence, Workforce Readiness Council Chair, with a check for $1,000 made payable to GSHRM. As you are aware, GSHRM was honored as a 2010 recipient of the prestigious SHRM Pinnacle Award due to the exemplary work of our Workforce Readiness Council. In presenting the check, David McGrath, ADP Representative, stated, “This chapter recognized a work skills gap in its community and the need to address that gap through communication and collaboration among local and state government, community organizations and businesses, educators, and city residents. Working together, all these stakeholders are getting the job done. They’re giving both students and workers the skills they need to compete today and into the future.” Thank you to all of the Workforce Readiness Committee and Strategic Planning Committee members for their work and dedication in making this award possible. Thank you also for your significant contribution to our community.
The March GSHRM program was excellent as Attorney Daniel T. Sulton with Ford and Harrison presented “An Update on Health Care Reform.” We extend a special thank you to Daniel for bringing us up to date on this important topic. Special thanks to our March silver sponsor, Webster University.
HR Careers Shadow Day
The GSHRM College Relations Subcommittee has announced that the 2nd annual HR Careers Shadow Day will be held on April 8. Tracey, thank you for spearheading this important event.
An Exciting Event is Coming to our Region and Support/Assistance is Needed to Make it a Success
On March 25-26, the 2011 SHRM Southeast Regional Student Conference is being held at Clemson University. This event gives students from across the region the chance to engage with fellow students and HR professionals in networking, learning, career development, and idea-sharing opportunities. It also features the first annual SHRM case-solving competition. Approximately 50 volunteers are needed to serve as room monitors and SPHR-certified judges for the competition and that’s where you can contribute. We hope you will attend the event and bring a few of your HR colleagues with you.
This is a great opportunity to meet with and engage HR students – the future of our profession! The Southeast Regional Team appreciates any help you can provide. If you have questions, please contact Chris Stapleton, the SC SHRM State Council’s College Relations Director,

As you are aware, the State of South Carolina enacted a new rate structure for State unemployment taxes (SUTA) last year. This law went into effect on January 1, 2011; however, businesses were not notified of their new rate assignments until January 31, 2011. The new rates are astronomical for many companies that had unemployment claims filed in the last several years. Ed Parris, GSHRM’s Legislative Committee Chair, is working to help GSHRM members have their voice heard by our legislators concerning this matter. We can make a difference in changing legislative matters. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Ed Parris.
A New Look for the GSHRM Website
SHRM recently announced changes to the website software, which they provide to GSHRM. If you are reading this message, you have noticed the new changes. We hope you will find the updates helpful in accessing GSHRM information via the web and ask for your patience as we continue to learn this new system. Our Website Committee Chair, Luke Varn, donates a significant amount of time to our website. Luke, thank you for your dedication and assistance! We greatly appreciate your help and support.
